Climate Change

(from Pocket Philosophy for End Times)

The planet’s Social Services system. At times it may seem convoluted, chaotic and nebulous. Other times brutal, heartless and stoic. But it knows what it’s doing, what it has to do, what it has always done, as it goes door to door, hounding down the illegitimate parents. It is after both them and their children. The central policy has always been the same: Survival of the Fittest, Evolve or Die, and Your Extinction is My Survival. The story is always the same: the drunk parents are too high to even remember that they have children, busy being full-time junkies on consumerism and fossil fuel. As the possibility of successful rehab becomes increasingly distant, they abandon their children in the middle of the storm, where they fall under the unforgiving foster care of the hurricane. It didn’t have to be this way. But the planet must go on.
