An extremely durable exoskeleton that a mutated form of the Humanity species developed. Due to the significant survival advantages that this exoskeleton initially imparted, the mutant was able to quickly expand across the world, colonising new habitats, replacing wild-type humans and threatening the existence of many other life forms. Eventually humanity became trapped inside its own exoskeleton and associated appendages and technologies. It began to live in its own world, losing touch with both the outside environment, as well as the organic life form that used to reside inside the exoskeleton. This ushered in a decline phase for the species, leading to its eventual near-extinction.

Something to think about! What did you have in mind?
With the internet becoming the ‚brain’ of the subject mankind, slowly, but much faster than in past times, we all will see ourselves as a different entity, this time not as races or nations or as individuals, but as the living intelligence of Gaia. Nature, as we know it will then act as the subconscious does in individuals, peoples will be like organs and individuals will act as cells. The death of a cell will be of no consequence, (as it actually already is, but not recognized as such) since it is Gaia and its intelligence, empowered by a global AI which will become the acting subject in this corner of the universe.
That is what I see as coming, if we don’t destroy mankind in its childhood before it reaches adulthood.
