Fuck Around and Find Out: The Politics of Hate

A key pathology common among far-right voters is that they fundamentally believe that a society where every single person thrives cannot exist.  There is a strong sense by these voters that there is only enough wealth to go around for a small segment of society, therefore someone else’s life has to be destroyed for them to move ahead.  This explains why people on the far right blame other social groups for their own lack of opportunity, and is the fundamental drive for racism, xenophobia and pure hatred, especially among those at the lowest incomes.  Rather than recognise that they are part of a dysfunctional economic system where poverty does not discriminate, they are desperate to blame specific social groups for their misfortune.  Their hatred is especially vicious towards social groups who seem to be gaining visibility.  Fascists and Republicans don’t fundamentally hate trans people.  They hate that another social group that was formerly invisible is now being added to the mix, which increases competition for resources.  The biggest thing that can make fascists go crazy is seeing another social group thrive, as the Jews did in Hitler’s Germany.  This is pure hate.

This is why In the US elections, Republican voters supported Trump not so that he can make all of America great again, but so that he can make all white people great again.  If only they had understood that his goal was even more narrow:  to make all tech oligarchs richer than 99.9% of America.  People in the far right fail to realise that the struggle is not between citizens and immigrants or heterosexuals and trans.  It is between the poor and the ultra-rich.

The problem with far-right voters is that they feel they can only get ahead in life if someone else is fucked over.  This is not surprising in the US, where this is actually, word-for-word the mantra of capitalism: my profit is your loss.  This entire system breeds fascism.

It doesn’t have to be this way.  The Left has a much more balanced view of society and the world, where equal opportunity and equal share in wealth is enjoyed by all groups: white or black, Christian or atheist, transgender or not.  There is no place for hate.

The FAFO hashtag has been making the rounds in the media, which stands for Fuck Around, Find Out, referring to Republicans who voted for Trump.  They thought that by voting for hate they will become the wealthy class.  What they failed to realise is that hate knows no bounds.  What goes around comes around, and hate comes back to you when you least expect it and from the people you least expect it from.  You can’t vote for hateful people who have no concept of empathy and expect them to be your friend.   They’ll ditch you the minute they secure your vote.  Fuck around and find out.

In the big picture, hate is a big problem for the human species.  It is a form of bias, a need to blame others for your own misfortune. Hate leads to more hate, conflict, competition, jealousy, destruction and environmental and civilisational collapse.  In a society that is increasingly apathetic and selfish, the most vivid and extreme incarnations of hate, Elon and Trump, have been appointed leaders of the country which gave birth to the most toxic forms of necrocapitalism.  This is not a coincidence.

  1. Many of my special ed students are Trump fans. They are about to lose their services when Trump ends the Department of education. The DOE funds my students’ sped services. It will be interesting to see what their parents think of Trump when their kids fail High School because they cant read or do math.
