Dictators never act alone, because they simply can’t. An autocracy is always a group effort, much like a pack of wolves: the leader of the pack is only the spark, the trigger. The real effort is invested not by the dictator themselves but by the thousands, millions who have chosen to cooperate with the junta.
Caroline Leavitt wakes up every morning with a smile, looks at her plastic face in the mirror as she brushes her teeth, and says: “today I’m gonna lie out of my ass again, as much as I can, as much as my pre-school imagination allows me to”, because she has firmly pledged her allegiance to the wolf pack. Autocracy conspirators are cowards because they can only participate in the crime against democracy when accompanied by a pack. Caroline never learned the courage of a lone wolf: how to stand up for herself, have an opinion of her own, and learn what an opinion is. She will never function in isolation because she was born a sub and will always be a sub. Her gut will always lead her to join the nearest and strongest pack of wolves, and hide in it so that she can pretend to be strong, along with other, equally pathetic subs.
The same goes for ICE agents. They cover their faces not out of fear of being recognised, but because they have effectively forfeited their identity. They are mere instruments, and they know very well that when you are a member of the pack, your voice does not matter. You just take orders, and you’re not even good at that. ICE agents are failed pizza delivery boys, and this should be a matter of grave concern. Because it’s one thing to get olives instead of pepperoni in your order, and another to get shot in the face three times.
There is a sick, rabid, salivating pack of wolves in the streets of America. But make no mistake, they are all cowards. Like wolves, their chorus of howls can easily turn into a whimper as they run with their tails between their legs. This won’t happen unless we stand up to them.
So today, you need to decide: are you a sub, a liar, and a faceless instrument of the junta? Have you chosen silence and complicity in your working environment, your circle of friends, your conversations? If yes, then you do have a name: you’re a Caroline. And there is a rising group of lone wolves who have zero respect for subs. They have smelled your fear from miles away, and they won’t be kind once they finally get their jaws in you. The end of this dictatorship is closer than you think.
